I always loved playing Loteria growing up and would look forward to it every year when we celebrated Mexican Independence Day.
I played over and over again for a chance to win a cheap top or something of the sort. Obviously, It wasn’t really the prizes that kept me playing. The game was just that much fun!
Then recently, I realized how useful this game could be for learning new Spanish vocabulary.
Perfect for the Classroom
If you’ve never heard of this game before, it’s typically played on holidays like the sixteenth of September (Mexican Independence Day) or at parties! It’s so much fun to play and can be a productive way to fill time. Playing “Loteria” is a great way to bring that fun into your Spanish classroom.
This game can be played when there is extra time in class, parties or even be incorporated into your lesson plans!
I tried to keep it as close to the original as possible with just a few changes.
I used fun and bright images, all designed and drawn by me. This needed to be a very kid friendly game, so I switched out some of the more intense, graphic cards to something more appropriate for a school setting.
For example, I removed cards like “El Borracho,” “El Diablito,” and “El Negrito”. I switched out a few other cards, but the game as a whole is played the same way as the original.
I love this game because the vocabulary really sticks! As you play the game over and over again, you will notice your students using the new words they’ve learned in the game.
Different Holiday Versions of the Game
Because I love the classic game of “Loteria” so much, I decided to make different versions of the game for different holidays throughout the year. It mixes things up and teaches all kinds of new words!
Once you have all the words from the classic game down, try some of the other versions!
The vocabulary words in each game version are catered to their corresponding holiday or topic. This way, students can learn all kinds of useful vocabulary that isn’t commonly taught in school.
What does Each Loteria Game Include?
So far, this Loteria game bundle includes a Classic Loteria Game, Halloween Loteria, Thanksgiving Loteria, and Christmas Loteria. However, I am planning on adding more versions throughout the year. This bundle works just like my other growing bundles. Once you buy it, every time I add something to the bundle, you will get the new resource for free!
Each game version includes each of the following:
26 unique game boards. Having so many game boards makes it easy for lots of people to play, and you don’t have to worry about multiple people getting the same one.
54 printable call cards. That also means 54 new vocabulary words to practice! If you want to play the traditional way, just print and cut out these cards, shuffle them, and call them out as you play the game.
54 google slides call cards. I love these because it makes it so easy to display the card for everyone in the room to see clearly. The cards can be randomized each round, so it works just like shuffling a deck!
Vocabulary Translation Guide. This is just a list of the Spanish words included in the game and their English equivalent.
Game rules. The rules of this game are fairly straightforward and easy to learn. It’s essentially a version of Bingo.
9 game patterns. Did you know you can play mix things up and play Loteria with different game patterns? Just choose which one you would like to play, and make sure everyone knows which one you will be playing for that round.
